| Frequently Asked Questions:
What Conditions Do Chiropractic Doctors Treat? Chiropractors treat the spine and therefore directly or indirectly cause changes in the nerve energy reaching every cell of every system of the human body. By removing or diminishing the ill effects on the nerve system, the doctor of chiropractic may help not only the muscles and bones, but more importantly should have a beneficial effect on the circulation, digestion, senses, reproduction, skin, urinary system, and other important systems. These benefits are most often seen when the nerves of the upper neck are restored to normal by chiropractic manipulations or adjustments to remove subluxations.
What Training Do Chiropractic Doctors Have? Chiropractors in most states now are required to have up to 4 years pre-chiropractic or a B.S degree before entering the Chiropractic Doctorate program. This is set by the Council on Chiropractic Education which controls the curriculum of most chiropractic schools. Most states now require that their applicants for licenses have completed and passed from two to four parts of the National Board Examinations. In addition, the other states require the passing of State Boards of Chiropractic for being licensed. Each year, most states also require from12 to 18 hours of Continuing Education .
What Should Be Expected on My First Visit? While every doctor practices the way he has been trained, it is usually standard to expect to have a thorough chiropractic and/or neurological and/or orthopedic examination. Most doctors will be interested in vital signs, general health and health history, accident history, surgeries and medications. The Chiropractic exam will help determine what is wrong and what will be done. Most competent doctors of Chiropractic will, as a matter of course, take at least two x-rays of the area of complaint. In my office, the patient is shown a short video regarding what is expected. Female patients are placed in modest gowns.
What Is Follow Up Care About? When your subluxations (pressured nerves) have been located and the first adjustment has been performed to reduce these pinches or misalignments, your doctor will likely place you on a schedule of future appointments of from 1 to 3 times per week, and these visits will diminish with time. Eventually, you may become a maintenance patient who is only seen periodically, or you may be dismissed to return only when you decide to do so. In our office, you may be encouraged to be checked each 4 to 6 weeks even when there are no symptoms, in order to prevent problems from occuring.
Who Is a Candidate for Chiropractic Care? Any person of any age in which a nerve pressure or subluxation is detected should be a candidate for our services at Corfman Chiropractic.. Even pregnant mothers, infants and older persons can benefit safely. Persons who have had any auto accidents whether recent or in the distant past usually need to be checked for spine damage. Low impact accidents, lifting accidents and strains and sprains are also in the domain of care at Corfman Chiropractic. I do examinations for sports, camps and other needs. I have treated patients who are a few hours old and patients who are in their 90's. Our office has always had a good representation of age groups, ethnic groups, and there seems to be about a 50/50 ratio of gender. We often see patients who have been injured in sports, home falls or work accidents, as well.
What Does Chiropractic Treatment “Feel Like” ? Treatment at our office is usually pleasant and not painful. No doctor anywhere can claim to be totally painless, but we take every precaution to relax the muscles, calm the patient and know the facts before proceeding to treat the patient. The use of physiotherapy, heat, cold, muscle work, massage or vibration can often reduce the muscle tension and calm the area of treatment. The use of proper adjusting technique and equipment will also reduce the possibilities of discomfort. In our office, we use methods like the activator, and toggle recoil methods that are safe for our patients. Chiropractic is comparatively so much safer than medications, surgeries or other therapies, statistically and clinically speaking. The adjustment to the spine will usually result in a click or small noise that is not accompanied by pain or discomfort. There is often comment by the patient of positive feelings just after being “adjusted” in our office. The presence of arthritis, fibromyalgia or other degenerative processes may cause us to take further precautions.
Do I Need a Referral From Another Doctor to See Dr. Corfman? No, most of our patients do not need to be referred by another doctor, although many patients have been recommended to me by other physicians in the past. Only isolated insurance policies may require a referral from an M.D., but these are rare.
What Does It Cost For Chiropractic Care? Chiropractic care is very cost effective for many reasons: In my office, patients are not seen unnecessarily. Visits are reasonable in cost, frequency and are usually within the insurance guidelines of reasonable and customary status. We do ask the patient for the co-pay portion of the insurance. This may range from 0 to 30% in some cases. Any doctor is expected by the insurance company to collect this portion. We fall under the major medical portion of most insurances. This is good in the long run for most policy holders, once the deductible has been met. Federal Blue Cross, Aetna, and Mail Handlers are good examples of companies who have reasonably good coverage. Other companies, like United HealthCare, and regular Blue Cross and especially Teachers Peehip can be favorable also. Most insurance carriers are covering us. Auto Insurance usually covers chiropractic services better than typical heath insurance does.
For patients who do not have insurance coverage, you can use Visa, Master Card, Discover, American Express, Cash, Check, or PCD.
Medicare may cover up to 12 visits per year, with certain restrictions applying. In Alabama, Medicaid does not cover our services. All Kids is usually covered for chiropractic. Work Comp may cover our care.
How Can I Learn What I Need To Know Before Becoming A Patient? At our office, Corfman Chiropractic, we offer an interview with Dr. Corfman that will answer your questions. You will have a good understanding of your finances, your candidacy for care, and your probable treatment plan at the end of this interview. There is no charge for such an interview. Should you care to begin treatment, then our standard reasonable charges are instituted at that time. We make every attempt to see new patients on the day they call in for an appointment. Call early today so that we will be more likely to fit you into our schedule. The first visit takes about 1 hour or more. Follow up care usually takes 10 to 25 minutes, depending upon your need for care other than adjustments.
Are There Any “Hidden” Charges? No! We feel that our regular fees are adequate and fair. The only additional charges that you may encounter are as follows. Should you need a back or neck or body support, vitamin, mineral, herb or physical therapy, you will be told of the charges at the time of service. Since insurance does not cover all of these, you will be asked to take care of those costs at the point of service. You will be asked to keep up with your insurance deductible or co-pay on each visit. Call Dr. Corfman today at our Huntsville Office at 650-0051
